XTI had plans beginning in 2017 to create a propulsion system making use of a turbogenerator with battery-powered electric motors. As of 2024 this plan has been put on hold as the the hybrid-electric technology isn’t considered by XTI to be ready for the TriFan 600.

“The numbers didn’t add up,”… “So we’ve said, ‘Let’s start first by certifying with certified turboshaft engines, then keep watching the technology develop and switch to hybrid-electric when that is feasible.’”

Saleem Zaheer, XTI’s Chief Commercial Officer

The turbogenerators will be powered by sustainable jet fuel to power the more than 700 conditional pre-orders for the TriFan 600 (amounting to a combined value of $7 billion).
